Where are you?

We are located in the Haw Creek Neighborhood in Asheville, NC just off Hwy 70/Tunnel Road. Our street address is 290 Old Haw Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28805.

From I-240 West:

Take Exit 7 off of I-240. After you exit, turn right to get on Hwy 70/East heading towards Black Mountain. You will immediately see a Best Western Motel on your right. Move into the far left lane as soon as you safely can. At the stoplight, turn left onto New Haw Creek Road. After you turn left, then make an immediate right turn to keep on New Haw Creek Rd. Go ½ mile and make a left turn onto Trinity Chapel Road. St. John's is located at the end of Trinity Chapel Road.

From I-240 East

Take Exit 7 off of I-240. After you exit you will go to the second light and make a left turn (follow the signs to Hwy 70 East). You will immediately see a Best Western Motel on your right. Move into the far left lane as soon as you safely can. At the stoplight, turn left onto New Haw Creek Road. After you turn left, then make an immediate right turn to keep on New Haw Creek Rd. Go ½ mile and make a left turn onto Trinity Chapel Road. St. John's is located at the end of Trinity Chapel Road.

Where do I park?

We have a small parking lot in front of the parish hall to the right side of the church when you come up Trinity Chapel Road. This is where our accessible spaces are located. We have a large parking lot located behind the church. To reach this lot, when you come up Trinity Chapel Road make a left turn onto Old Haw Creek Road and then take the first right onto Pressley. Then make a right turn into our parking lot. There is a wide sidewalk that will lead you to the Church. You can also enter the Parish Hall from this parking lot as well as from the front lot.

Where are the rest rooms?

There are restrooms in both the Parish Hall (there is a changing table for babies in the Women's rest room) and in the church (go through the door at the end of the right side aisle.Turn right for the men's room and go straight and to the right for the women's room).

How should I dress?

Most of us dress very casually. The rule is to be comfortable and to be yourself.

What do I call the minister?

In the Episcopal Church we use the term “priest” instead of “minister” or “pastor.” Our priest is quite comfortable with you calling her “Jeanne” but you can also call her “Mother Jeanne” if that is more comfortable for you. “Reverend” is only a term used when writing the name of a priest and is not used as part of a verbal address. A “rector” just refers to the priest is in charge of a parish.

Is there a nursery for my baby or toddler?

We do not have a separate nursery but there is a space for babies and toddlers at the back of the church. There is a soft colorful carpet (great for crawling babies), two rocking chairs, quiet toys and a selection of books and puzzles. We love children of all ages and no one minds their noise. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the service while your little one plays.

Do I have to stay the whole hour at Coffee Hour?

No and yes. You don't have to but you can if you want to! Coffee hour is a time set aside after the Sunday 11 am worship service to enjoy coffee and simple refreshments. It is also a time to get to know one another better and to celebrate special occasions in the life of the parish. On the second Sunday of the month we celebrate everyone who has a birthday or anniversary that month by having cake!

How do I become a member of St. John's?

First, join us for worship. You will also want to speak to our rector, the Rev. Jeanne Finan. If you are a member of another Episcopal church, you can request that your letter of membership be transferred to St. John's. If you are a member of another Christian denomination you would need to bring your baptismal certificate or just provide the parish office with your birth date and place and your baptismal date and place so that we can add your name to our membership records. If you have never belonged to a church or been baptized, no problem. The Episcopal Church baptizes both children and adults. Jeanne will meet with you and explain baptism and confirmation and answer your questions.

Who can receive communion?

All are welcome at God's table. Just come forward to the communion rail when the usher invites your row, stand or kneel, and hold out your hands. The priest will place the bread in your hands. Eat the bread. Then a chalice minister will come and offer you the cup which contains wine. Help the chalice minister guide the cup to your lips and take a small sip. If you do not wish to receive the wine, cross your arms over your chest after you have received the bread. If you do not wish to receive either the bread or wine, come forward but cross your arms over your chest and the priest will give you a blessing.

It is best to call before you come to be certain that someone will be available to meet with you or help you with what you need. If the Rector is not in town there will be instructions on the answering machine as to how you can reach her in the case of an emergency.
