Ministries

There are many ways to get involved at St. John's. Here are a few to consider.

Liturgical Ministries

Acolyte: serve as crucifer, torch bearer or thurifer.
We have both adult and youth acolytes.

Altar Guild : prepare the church for worship

Bread Baker: bake the bread for Communion

Choir : lead the people in song during worship and other events

Daily Office Officiant:  lead Morning/Evening Prayer

Eucharistic Minister:  administer the chalice at communion

Flower Guild : prepare the flowers for worship and special events

Healing Minister: pray and lay hands on people for healing

Lay Reader:  proclaim Scripture during worship

Liturgical Arts Guild : create liturgical hangings, vestments, and other artwork for use in our worship

St. Francis Guild : care for the Memorial garden, the flower beds and the general landscaping of the church; coordinates the Spring and Fall Work Days

Ushers : welcome visitors and congregation members, pass out service programs, take up the collection, guide people to communion and straighten up afterward.

Outreach Ministries

Epiphany Manger: coordinates the collection during the season of Epiphany of new baby items and baby food and delivers the items to a local organization assisting young families

Habitat for Humanity : coordinates the team to help build houses for those in need

Manna Food Bank : collects and delivers donated non-perishable food goods

Ragdolls2love : sew colorful rag dolls to give to children throughout the world who are suffering because of war, disease or natural disasters.

Room in the Inn : coordinates the staffing of an emergency shelter and an evening meal or a quarterly basis for homeless women in Asheville. Volunteers serve meals and/or stay through the night with other volunteers

Souper Bowl Sunday : coordinates and collects canned goods and donations for the national Souper Bowl Sunday effort

Threads of Love : sews, knits and crochets baby clothes and accessories for premature babies and infants that die at birth or shortly after

United Thank Offering (UTO ): coordinates the collection of gifts for the National ECW's spring and fall ingathering which funds grants around the world

Women's Prison Ministry : assists and supports the chaplaincy program at the Swannanoa Women's Correctional Center

WELCOME TABLE : a partnership ministry with other East Asheville churches to offer a free weekly dinner for those who are hungry or just want fellowship. Thursday evenings, 5 to 7 pm at Groce Methodist Church

Organizations and Committees

Bele Chere : coordinates the church's booth at the downtown Asheville Bele Chere festival that serves as a fund raiser and a means of evangelism for St. John's

Clean Team : cleans the church and the parish hall.

Coffee Hour: encourages people to host and then assists those hosting Coffee Hour after our weekly Sunday 11 am service

Episcopal Youth Community : coordinates activities for our young people and coordinates attendance for Diocesan sponsored youth events

Fellowship Events : coordinates special parish meals and events such as St. John's Feast Day (last Sunday of Epiphany); Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper:Easter Sunday Lunch; Feast of Pentecost; Parish Picnic (first Sunday in October); Thanksgiving Lunch (Sunday before Thanksgiving Day)

Razzle Dazzle Raffle : coordinates this annual fund raising event for the parish

Recycling/Garbage : collects items for recyling and takes them to the recycling center; takes out the church garbage cans to the road on Tuesday evenings and brings them back up to the Parish Hall on Wednesday evenings.

Stewardship: coordinates the annual Every Member Giving campaign to not only gather in pledges but also educate the congregation about stewardship
