Why Visit?

At St. John’s you’ll find a place to belong—a place to experience God’s love. And just as we mentioned on our home page, “You already know us. We are your neighbor, your dentist, your bag boy, your business owner, and probably already your friend.” So make a point to drop by one of our services and let us say, “Hello.” We can’t wait to meet you.

In most of our services, we use the Book of Common Prayer, though alternative liturgies are used on occasion and in certain seasons of the Church year. Worship is a time to come together with others, to explore the holy mystery of God in word and sacrament, and to offer our prayers as a community.

Families with Children

At St. John’s we love our families! From infants to high school students, we have done our best to help your children have a fun experience in our Christian Formation Classes which offer education, understanding, and worship participation while actively learning the teachings of the Episcopal Church.

Let Us Know You Are Coming And Well Save You A Seat

St. John’s Episcopal Church has welcomed those in the greater Asheville area since 1885 when it was established as a satellite church of Trinity Episcopal in downtown Asheville. At the time (circa 1885), it was an arduous 2-hour ride over the top of Town Mountain to get to Trinity so the St. John Parish provided a place for those who lived in the Haw Creek Valley to worship much closer to their homes.

The bright red doors of our current sanctuary opened in the early 1960s, and our legacy continues here as vibrant participant in Western North Carolina’s Episcopal community. This church and its congregation continually renews itself, it adapts, it’s open, and it has a history of pivoting to the areas where issues to be addressed.

You will find the church office, our Christian formation classrooms, the choir rehearsal room, restrooms, and the community room in the Parish Hall adjacent to our worship building.

  • There is a small parking lot in front of the parish hall to the right side of the church accessed from Trinity Chapel Road. This is where our accessible spaces are located. We have a large parking lot located behind the church. To reach this lot, when you come up Trinity Chapel Road make a left turn onto Old Haw Creek Road and then take the first right onto Pressley. Then make a right turn into our parking lot. There is a wide sidewalk that will lead you to the Church. You can also enter the Parish Hall from this parking lot as well as from the front lot.

  • There are restrooms in both the Parish Hall (there is a changing table for babies in the women’s room) and in the church (go through the door at the end of the right side aisle: turn right for the men’s room; go straight and to the right for the women’s room).

  • Most of us dress very casually. Our only “rule” is to be comfortable and to be yourself.

  • In the Episcopal Church, we use the term “priest” instead of “minister” or “pastor.” “Reverend” is only a term used when writing the name of a priest and is not used as part of a verbal address. A “rector” just refers to the priest that is in charge of a parish.

  • We do not have a separate nursery but there is a space for babies and toddlers at the back of the church. There is a soft colorful carpet (great for crawling babies), two rocking chairs, quiet toys and a selection of books and puzzles. We love children of all ages and no one minds their noise. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the service while your little one plays.

  • No, and yes. You don’t have to but you can if you want to! Coffee Hour is a time set aside after the Sunday 11:00 am worship service to enjoy coffee and simple refreshments. It is also a time to get to know one another better and to celebrate special occasions in the life of the parish.

  • First, join us for worship. You will also want to speak to our rector. If you are a member of another Episcopal church, you can request that your letter of membership be transferred to St. John’s. If you are a member of another Christian denomination you would need to bring your baptismal certificate or just provide the parish office with your birth date and place and your baptismal date and place so that we can add your name to our membership records. If you have never belonged to a church or been baptized, no problem. The Episcopal Church baptizes both children and adults. Jeanne will meet with you and explain baptism and confirmation and answer your questions.

  • All are welcome at God’s table. Just come forward to the communion rail when the usher invites your row, stand or kneel, and hold out your hands. The priest will place the bread in your hands. Eat the bread. Then a chalice minister will come and offer you the cup which contains wine. Help the chalice minister guide the cup to your lips and take a small sip. If you do not wish to receive the wine, cross your arms over your chest after you have received the bread. If you do not wish to receive either the bread or wine, come forward but cross your arms over your chest and the priest will give you a blessing.

  • You can call the church at (828) 298-3553 or use our contact form here. It is best to call before you come to be certain that someone will be available to meet with you or help you with what you need. If the Rector is not in town there will be instructions on the answering machine as to how you can reach them in the case of an emergency.

  • For information on baptisms, weddings and funerals: Please call the church office at (828) 298-3553.
